Networking and Professional Development Luncheon

The Public in the Machine - Using the latest online tools that put PR in the driver's seat
April 18, 2007, 11 am - 1 pm

Maggiano's Little Italy,516 N. Clark Street, Chicago (use the banquet entrance off of Grand Ave.)

Ed Schipul will provide an overview of social networking Web sites and the role they can play in public relations. Sites such as YouTube, Technorati, flickr, Wikepedia and others can be extremely powerful in helping organizations reach, engage and establish close bonds with their target publics. But there are subtle rules of net-etiquette to be aware of to avoid stumbling into hostilities. Participants will leave understanding how to weave social networking technologies into their PR strategies and they will see how opening their organization to the scrutiny and input of outsiders is both revolutionary and liberating – a simultaneous give and take that makes research immediate and enables an organization to apply instant feedback for the benefit of all.

Afternoon Seminar
Trends in public relations technology: Harnessing the chaos to encourage collaboration and engagement
April 18, 2007, 1:30 - 4 pm
Maggiano's Little Italy,516 N. Clark Street, Chicago (use the banquet entrance off of Grand Ave.)

With the emergence of powerful Web technologies such as blogs, wikis, podcasting, RSS and tagging, the Web is quickly becoming more dynamic and interactive. While users once visited Web sites to consume content, they are increasingly being given the ability to contribute and edit content as well. This “distributed authoring” is changing the fundamental way Web users interact with Web sites. In this session, we will explore what these trends mean for public relations professionals. If Web usage is increasingly oriented toward interaction and fostering social networks, how can organizations to harness these powers to achieve their own objectives – and is doing so advisable? Following the seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Immediately start their own blog and become comfortable experimenting with wiki-enabled sites.
  • Understand the pros and cons of seeking to attempt to harness interactive technologies and strategically apply what they learn to protect and enhance their Web presence.
  • Identify opportunities to integrate more dynamic and interactive capabilities into their own Web sites as well as client sites.
  • Explain what Podcasts, RSS streams and other emerging technologies are and why they are important to understand and utilize.
  • Become an expert resource for clients and peers on issues related to emerging Web trends.
